Self Portrait

In the first semester of my Junior year I am in an Art class, Intro to Visual Arts. In this class we explore all kinds of art, from ceramics to still life and all that is in between. For our most recent project we did a self portrait using fountain ink pens. The first thing we did for this project was go through books, magazines, hymnals, etc. When we went through these we looked for different words that we could personally express through a facial expression. The word I chose was  ‘Joyful’. Once we had our picture we printed it off in full saturation and all black and white. We then traced two of our pictures onto our hymn page using a light box. With the ink we then inked all the black spots on the page so we could see our facial features and all that was in the picture. One thing we did though was box out our word that was in the black so the word pops in order to connect to the emotion we are expressing in the picture. The hardest thing about this project was to trust the process. There were many times I thought it looked terrible because all I had on the page was one eye. At the end I am very proud of the outcome of this project even though it was very time consuming.
